How To Correct a Mistake On a Check: Step-by-Step Cross out the mistake by drawing one neat line through the middle of the mistake. Write the correction above the crossed-out mistake. Initial your correction to authenticate it. Alert teller to your corrections. All else fails, you can opt to void the check.
1. Legal issues: Writing in the date yourself could be considered altering the check, which is illegal in many jurisdictions. 2. Potential disputes: If there is a dispute about when the check was written or should be cashed, having the recipient fill in the date could complicate matters.
When writing checks, we can all make silly mistakes like a misspelled name or wrong date. Thankfully, banks have procedures for fixing minor errors, so payments still go through. For example, initialing next to a corrected date shows you fixed the mistake intentionally.
Include pay to the order of and write the recipients name. This is the critical step that changes the payee written on the check from you to a new recipient. In the checks current state, your name is in the payee field on the front of the check.
To alter a check would be to change the dollar amount, routing number, and/or date on it. If the initial financial document has been modified from its original version, that is illegal.
Banks are permitted to pay checks even though payment occurs prior to the date of the check. A check is payable upon demand unless you submit a formal post-dating notice with your bank, possibly for a fee.
Unfortunately, other than asking the check writer to void this check and write another, the only way around this issue is to copy their incorrect spelling in your endorsement. Then you can provide your correct name in your official signature.
So they CAN accept it, but they dont have to. If you mistakenly wrote a date more than 6 months ago, or an impossible date like February 32, the bank will probably reject the check. Otherwise, it might ignore the date. Its not uncommon for people to make mistakes like writing the previous year in January.
