In a block quotation that includes more than one paragraph, indent the beginning of the paragraphs after the first one, even if your source uses line spaces instead of indentation to indicate paragraph breaks.
Introduce your quote, then on a new line, indent the entire quotation inch from the left margin. The in-text citation follows the ending punctuation of the quotation. Remember to maintain double spacing in the essay.
If you would like to skip part of a quotation to save space or eliminate unnecessary text, you can use an ellipsis. An ellipsis is three dots (. . . ) preceded and followed by a space as in the following examples. An ellipsis can be used in both MLA and APA citation styles.
Using Brackets Sometimes information is missing or inaccurate in a quote. Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent.
When a speakers words in dialogue extend to more than one paragraph, use an opening quotation mark at the beginning of each paragraph. Use a closing quotation mark, however, only at the end of the persons speech, not at the end of every paragraph.
Whenever you want to leave out material from within a quotation, you need to use an ellipsis, which is a series of three periods, each of which should be preceded and followed by a space.
If any incorrect spelling, punctuation, or grammar in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and in brackets, immediately after the error in the quotation.
For direct quotations of more than one paragraph, place open quotation marks at the start of each new paragraph. Place close quotation marks at the end of only the last paragraph.
