Hi everyone, today I would like to talk about a failed disk on our direct attached storage. As you can see we have the Dell PowerVault MD3220, it has two redundant controllers so in case one goes down, the whole storage array is still available; And we have an expansion enclosure here which is the Dell PV MD1220. This is the enclosure with the failed disk at Slot 22. So lets pop this open. There was a predictive failure at Slot 22 and I have manually failed and removed the drive. These two enclosures are connected to each other and we have assigned the last two disks at Slot 23 as Global Hot Spares (GHS) in case if any of the disks fail, the GHS will take over The array is rebuilt on one of these hot spares. In a predictive failure, the disk hasnt failed totally. It is a proactive means to inform the system administrator and I will go into MDSM (Modular Disk Storage Manager) and I have to right-click on the disk and fail it.
