Cross marking/grading with follow-up meetings for discussion and comparison. Using one teacher to mark/grade all responses to a particular part of an assessment task, (e.g., a section of an examination paper, the first two scenes of a play)
It is a means of ensuring that two or more providers delivering the same unit standards and/or qualifications are assessing consistently to the same standard, using valid instruments, and meeting the national standard registered on the NQF. SAQA refers to this function as external moderation‟.
Moderation is described as an activity between teachers and senior leadership team members who make judgements and check the accuracy of what pupils understand, know and can do and how well other teachers have assessed these pupils.
Moderation is defined as a process of sample marking of submitted work for a particular assessment by an internal examiner other than the person originally designated to mark the work presented for assessment.
Your work may then be subject to a process known as moderation. Moderation will generally involve a second marker checking a sample of work, along with the first markers marks and comments, to verify the overall standard of marking and the use of the marking criteria.
Moderation is a process separate from the marking of assessments, which ensures that an assessment outcome (eg mark and / or grade) is fair, valid and reliable, that assessment criteria have been applied consistently, and that any differences in academic judgement between individual markers can be acknowledged and
We have separated the moderation process into three sections - planning, meeting and reviewing: Planning for moderation. Meeting for moderating. Reviewing moderation processes.
It is a process for ensuring that marks or grades are awarded appropriately and consistently. Moderation involves checking and reviewing assessment schemes, items and assessor judgments. It is essentially a form of feedback to markers to help them align their marking standards with those of other markers.
