Curley wears a glove fulla Vaseline on one hand because, ing to Candy, hes keepin that hand soft for his wife. Since farm work is physical and tough on a persons hands, the Vaseline will prevent at least one of Curleys hands from becoming chapped and roughsomething he clearly believes his wife would find
Steinbeck also focuses on Lennies size through comparing him to animals such as bears. His relationship with George is at times presented as master and pet, showing how much Lennie needs George for guidance and to survive.
In John Steinbecks novel Of Mice and Men, the death of Candys dog symbolises the loneliness of the ranch workers, and demonstrates that there is no place for affection or sentimentality in their lives. Early on in the novel, George states that men who work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world.
Curley, on the defensive and looking for someone to fight, picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully. Lennie doesnt protect himself until George tells him to fight back. When Lennie does, he crushes all the bones in Curleys hand.
Then, she remembers that Curleys hand was smashed. She asks the three what happened to it. Candy tells her that Curley got it caught in a machine. She then looks at Lennie and says that he was the machine.
Ultimately, mice are a symbol of false hope in the novel. Lennie likes to hold soft things, but he often kills them because he is so strong. He often carries dead mice around to stroke as a form of comfort.
Candys dog symbolizes the fate of the weak. Candy fears that he, too, will be killed when he is no longer strong. The dogs death is connected to Lennies death, as Lennie is unable to function in the society in which he lives.
Here, Candys dog symbolizes Candy as an old man and the effects of getting older. Learning of Candys dogs condition helps readers understand how Candy himself might feel. Candy and his dog seem to be extensions of one another, each moving slowly and with obvious handicaps that affect their usefulness and well-being.
The shooting of Candys dog shows the callousness of Carlson and the reality of old age and infirmity. Carlson offers to shoot the old dog, complaining many times of the smell.
