If youre curious do light bulbs flicker before they burn out, the answer is usually no, but they do flicker if theyre loose. When light bulbs are not twisted securely in their sockets, power flows unevenly, which can produce a flickering effect. This issue is easily resolved.
Flickering lights, or lights that dim on their own, can indicate a circuit breaker is failing. If its just one light fixture, the problem may simply be a loose bulb. If the flickering and dimming continues or involves other fixtures, especially along the same circuit, the circuit breaker could be the culprit.
If your lights are flickering, first check if your bulbs are loose and tighten them up to see if that solves the problem. Then tighten the wiring in your light switches. Finally, make sure the screws in your breaker box are tight and see if this fixes your problem.
Even if the flickering seems harmless, it could be a sign of a more serious underlying issue with your electrical wiring that could present a dangerous fire hazard to your home. Particularly if the flickering increases or changes in any way, call your electrician for an inspection just to be safe.
Again, most flickering is caused by an old, faulty or incompatible wall switch or bulbs that are loose or of poor quality. Theres a good chance that your lighting issues can be addressed by a quick fix like replacing a dimmer or swapping out a light bulb.
If flickering increases, loose wiring may be the cause. It may be due to incorrect light installation, outdated wiring, or worn-out wiring or connectors. This may be a serious problem. Any loose electrical connection is a fire hazard.
