This is a dated technique that filmmakers used to use to accentuate heightened emotion. You can find an example of a parody of this old style by Owen Roizman in the 1991 film The Addams Family when Anjelica Huston (as Morticia Addams) steps right into a slash of light that goes across her eyes.
The key light is the first and usually most important light that a photographer, cinematographer, lighting cameraman, or other scene composer will use in a lighting setup. The purpose of the key light is to highlight the form and dimension of the subject.
The right lighting illuminates the interior design and highlights your homes best features. There are four main types of lighting ambient, task, accent, and decorative.
Shatner light A Shatner light [] is the nickname that our Art Director Grant Freckelton coined for a bar of light across the face or eyes of a character such as was somewhat over-used on the original Star Trek for Kirk closeups.
Avoid any flat lighting, give the lighting some shape. Avoid multiple black areas: multiple shadows that go in different directions make the shot look busy and distracting. The shadows on the character should be realistic but also aesthetically pleasing and tidy.
The light used to create reflections in the eyes is called an eyelight, or an Obie. The reflections are called catchlights. If you have a really big reflection in the eye, you cant really [discern] the texture and pattern in the iris, and if you have no reflection, the eye looks dead.
