While impressions measure the number of people who may have seen digital content, views show the number of people who took an action after seeing the content. A social media site counts the same person as multiple impressions if that person sees the content more than once.
An engagement, or a click, happens when the user actually follows through and clicks on the ad. While engagements are ultimately more valuable, impressions are still an important metric for mobile marketers.
Clicks are important to track because they show how many people have engaged with your advertisement and what type of engagement it was. In comparison to impressions, it is more critical to measure clicks because they indicate engagement with your ad and tell you how many people have actually taken action.
New competitors or competitors who adjust their existing accounts can influence how many impressions your ads receive. For example, your biggest competitor might decide to raise their bids, pushing your ad off of the first page of search results. You might then notice a decrease in impressions.
Click-through rate is based on views that come from counted impressions. If you divide the total views on your video by the number of impressions you may not see the same number as the click-through rate. Some views do not originate from thumbnail impressions.
This ratio of clicks to impressions is measured by whats known as the click-through rate (CTR). To calculate CTR, simply divide the number of clicks by the number of impressions; for example, if your ad received 1,000 impressions and 25 clicks, you would have a 2.5% CTR.
If your CTR has remained steady but is seeing click volume decrease, the main issue is this: decreased impressions. If you have a seasonal product, youre naturally going to have dips and peaks in demand. If searches go down for your particular industry, your keywords impressions will also decrease.
Impressions are heavily dependant on the results page, but clicks are dependent on the rank position. If you show up on page one of the Google search results, youre getting all of the impressions for the search.
Because many ad impressions come from the first page of Google search results, when you raise your bid, you increase the likelihood of your ad appearing on the first page and receiving more impressions. Temporary events can also have a large impact.
Basically, its the percentage of people who click your ad (clicks) divided by the ones who view your ad (impressions). As far as what constitutes a good click through rate, the average is around 1.91% for search and 0.35% for display.
