Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/ . In the navigation pane, choose AMIs, and then select an AMI. On the Details tab, check the values for Platform details and Usage operation.
To update an Auto Scaling group, specify the name of the group and the property that you want to change. Any properties that you don't specify are not changed by this update request. The new settings take effect on any scaling activities after this call returns.
You can find Linux AMIs using the Amazon EC2 console. You can select from the list of AMIs when you use the launch instance wizard to launch an instance, or you can search through all available AMIs using the Images page. AMI IDs are unique to each AWS Region.
So if you have an existing EC2 instance, it's instance ID will not change. Once you opt-in, when you create a new EC2 instance, that new EC2 instance can and/or will have a longer instance ID. Only the creation of new resources are affected.
The answer is that you cannot replace the AMI for an existing EC2 instance. However, you can replace the root volume with a new volume which is basically the same thing. That new root volume can come from another EC2 instance.
To update an AMI, launch an instance and update its software. For that instance to have access to the AWS services that it needs, create an AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) role with the correct permissions policies attached.
An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a supported and maintained image provided by AWS that provides the information required to launch an instance. You must specify an AMI when you launch an instance. You can launch multiple instances from a single AMI when you require multiple instances with the same configuration.
Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance Right-click the instance you want to use as the basis for your AMI, and choose Create Image from the context menu. Create Image context menu. In the Create Image dialog box, type a unique name and description, and then choose Create Image.
Update AMI Identify the current LC used for the ASG. Create a copy of the LC with an updated AMI. Navigate to AWS Console –> Services –> EC2 –> Auto Scaling –> Launch Configurations. Select a LC –> Copy launch configuration. Click Edit AMI. Click Create launch configuration. Edit the ASG and select the new LC.
Create an AMI from an Amazon EC2 Instance Right-click the instance you want to use as the basis for your AMI, and choose Create Image from the context menu. Create Image context menu. In the Create Image dialog box, type a unique name and description, and then choose Create Image.
