FIX is widely used by both the buy side (institutions) as well as the sell side (brokers/dealers) of the financial markets. Among its users are mutual funds, investment banks, brokers, stock exchanges and ECNs. FIX has become the standard electronic protocol for pre-trade communications and trade execution.
How does FIX work? Clients and brokers use software called FIX engines to connect using the FIX protocol. In order to begin a FIX session, Client A and Broker B connect their engines at a predetermined start time using a predetermined host and comp ID.
The FIX protocol specification was originally authored in 1992 by Robert Bob Lamoureux and Chris Morstatt to enable electronic communication of equity trading data between Fidelity Investments and Salomon Brothers. FIX initially addressed information between broker-dealers and their institutional clients.
This non-proprietary, free and open standard is constantly being developed to support evolving business and regulatory needs, and is used by thousands of firms every day to complete millions of transactions.
The Financial Information eXchange (FIX) is an information and data protocol used to disseminate price and trade information among investment banks and broker-dealers. The FIX Trading Community is the non-profit entity created to ensure FIX continues in the public domain.
The FIX messaging standard is owned, maintained and developed through the collaborative efforts of FIX Trading Community member firms, which include many of the worlds leading financial institutions.
FIX systems transfer accurate and timely financial information concerning securities trades through and across security exchange houses. The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is the standard for back office messaging, while the FIX is the standard for front office messaging.
The FIX protocol was originally developed in 1992 as a way for large equity trading companies to exchange information between broker-dealers and clients. FIX is now the messaging standard for the global equity markets, and is even expanding into foreign exchange, fixed income, and derivatives markets.
