Cost of attendance (COA) is the amount of money it will cost a student to go to a particular college for one academic year. The cost of attendance includes tuition and fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, and other expenses.
Identify a schools total cost of attendance. It is the price of tuition and fees for that year plus the costs of room and board and a years worth of health insurance premiums. It may include an estimate for personal expenses (books, supplies, entertainment, and transportation) as well.
Tax-Free Scholarship Income Students from Canada attending U.S. schools generally remain Canadian income tax residents and are taxable in Canada on their worldwide income .
So, payments of scholarships or fellowships made to international students are subject to U.S. tax reporting and withholding, unless there are treaty benefits available and formally claimed.
The amount of tax you actually owe could be from 0-28% of the excess scholarship, depending on your other income, but 10% or 15% is most likely. Plus penalties and interest. And probably 3-5% for your state income tax.
If you earned scholarships and grants that add up to more than your total cost of attendance, your school may send you a refund of the leftover scholarship money. Keep in mind, you may have to pay taxes on that amount.
If you have received a scholarship, fellowship, or bursary related to a part-time program for which you are a part-time qualifying student for 2020, 2021, or 2022, the scholarship exemption is equal to the tuition paid plus the costs of program-related materials.
However, let me reiterate that for a scholarship to be completely tax-free, all the money must be used for qualified education expenses. For example, if your daughter received a $10,000 scholarship and tuition was $15,000, she wouldnt owe taxes on the money.
Generally, you report any portion of a scholarship, a fellowship grant, or other grant that you must include in gross income as follows: If filing Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, include the taxable portion in the total amount reported on Line 1a of your tax return.
If part of such a foreign scholarship has to be reported on a students Canadian income tax return, then that part is declared at Line 130 (Other income) in Canadian dollars, and a foreign tax credit may generally be calculated for the non-refundable foreign tax paid in respect of the net scholarship declared.
