when a formula in a cell refers to its own cell then it is called circular reference in excel so lets understand what is circular reference why it occurs and how we can fix that now in cell a1 i will type a number 10 then in a2 let me type 20 in a3 let me type 13 now if i want to add these three numbers in cell a4 let me highlight a4 cell with yellow color so to add these three numbers in a4 i will use formula as sum equal to sum and i will select a1 a2 and a3 so if i extend this selection to a4 here we can see a1 to a4 that means we are referring to own cell as well i am closing the bracket pressing and you can see we are getting circular reference error if i press ok and result is coming 0 now instead of doing this if i use normal formula sum and i do not use the cell cell i use only a1 a2 and a3 then i get the correct result so how we can avoid circular reference or how we can fix the circular reference for that i will click on file and here we have options i will click on options

How to remove circular references in Excel Check the formula for references to the formulas cell. Select the cell that contains the circular reference. Check for indirect references. Copy the formula to a different cell.
How to Enable/Disable Circular References in Excel? Firstly, we must go to the File tab. Then, we must see at the last click on Options. Next, we must go to Formulas, see the Calculation options at the top, and enable the Iterative Calculation. Then click on OK.
A particular useful and common symbol used in Excel is the dollar sign within a formula. Note that this does not indicate currency; rather, its used to fix a cell address in place in order that a single cell can be used repetitively in multiple formulas by copying formulas between cells.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this feature. A black circle under the cursor is a tap handle to make it easier to choose the cursor with your finger or pen.
The circular reference error message There are one or more circular references where a formula refers to its own cell either directly or indirectly. This might cause them to calculate incorrectly. Try removing or changing these references, or moving the formulas to different cells.
A circular reference is created when the formula is directly or indirectly dependent on itself. Circular logic is when C=A+B but in turn A or B is a function of C. Although it is possible to solve, using an iterative approach, this breaks a fundamental rule in efficient financial modelling.
Option 1: Manually break the circularity Replace the income statement interest expense projections with zeros. This effectively breaks the circularity the errors should now disappear. Copy and paste the interest expense formulas (that you pasted to the right of your model) back into the income statement.
To fix the problem, you can move the formula to another cell. Press Ctrl+X to cut the formula, select another cell, and press Ctrl+V to paste it. You can also try one of these techniques: If you just entered a formula, start with that cell and check to see if you refer to the cell itself.
How to find circular references in Excel Go to the Formulas tab, click the arrow next to Error Checking, and point to Circular References The last entered circular reference is displayed there. Click on the cell listed under Circular References, and Excel will bring you exactly to that cell.
Manually detect Circular References in Excel You want to make sure there are no circular references in the file. Go to tab Formulas, choose Error-checking and Circular References. Excel will show you exactly in which cell(s) circular references are detected.
