Fixing Unwanted Webpage Characters Solution Option #1 - Fix individual characters. Solution Option #2 - Change HTML page encoding (HTML5) Solution Option #3 - Save as with different encoding.
The charset attribute specifies the character encoding for the HTML document. The HTML5 specification encourages web developers to use the UTF-8 character set, which covers almost all of the characters and symbols in the world!
UTF-8 has one unfortunate disadvantage, that many 16-bit characters are encoded in 3 bytes. This disadvantage is more than offset by its advantages, and by having a single, simple encoding that can work in all languages and contexts.
The HTML5 Standard: Unicode UTF-8 The Unicode Standard covers (almost) all the characters, punctuations, and symbols in the world. Unicode enables processing, storage, and transport of text independent of platform and language. The default character encoding in HTML-5 is UTF-8.
Furthermore, most browsers use UTF-8 by default if no character encoding is specified. But because thats not guaranteed, its better to just include a character encoding specification using the tag in your HTML file. There you have it.
The character encoding should be specified for every HTML page, either by using the charset parameter on the Content-Type HTTP response header (e.g.: Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 ) and/or using the charset meta tag in the file.
