Green screen basically lets you drop in whatever background images you want behind the actors and/or foreground. It's used in film production (and also in news and weather reports) to relatively simply place the desired background behind the subject/actor/presenter.
This is usually a single-colored backdrop, which can be any color, but is generally bright green because it's the color furthest away from human skin tones. (Blue screens were frequently used in the early days with film and might still be used in some instances.)
Any green colours are digitally filtered out and replaced by the desired video. If the subject wears anything green, the background image fills that in too, giving the impression the person has holes in them. Green is used as it is the least like skin tone.
This process can be performed with any color, but green is preferred because: Green is one of the furthest colors from skin tone. This prevents your skin from being canceled out in the final video.
Film anywhere, in or out of this world, with a green screen. Removing the coloured background is also referred to as “chroma keying.” Why do we use a green background? It doesn't match any natural skin tone or hair colour, so it's easy to remove without grabbing parts of the person in the foreground.
In the old days, what you would see on a movie set would pretty much be what you saw in the final movie. With modern technology giving us the capability of computer generated imagery (CGI), all you need is a green screen and a couple of props.
Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is the application of the field of computer graphics (or more specifically, 3D computer graphics) to special effects. CGI is used in films, television programs commercials, and printed media. Green Screen just enhances CGI's ability to generate a better image.
