Three popular metal finishing techniques are anodising, powder coating and electroplating. Each has its strengths and limitations, and deliver different advantages for different applications.
What is the standard surface finish in machining? The standard surface finish for a machined part is usually 3.2 m Ra. This is the least expensive, and typically the roughest machining surface finish recommended for parts intended to experience vibrations, heavy loads, or amounts of stress.
2D is a refined surface finish that is achieved by cold rolling, heat treating and pickling. This is a uniform, dull silver gray finish that is rougher than a No. 2B. Pickling or descaling is necessary after heat treatment to remove the chromium depleted dark surface layer and restore corrosion resistance.
Chemical Information. 304 stainless steel 2B finish is a mill finish, which is smooth and NOT the brushed finish commonly seen on kitchen appliances. 304 stainless steel 2B finish is light gray in color. 304 stainless steel 2B finish may or may not have a protective film on one side to prevent scratching.
SURFACE FINISHING PROCESSES FROM SOURCE Powder Coating Liquid Coating. Electroplating, Galvanizing, and Anodizing. Electropolishing. Sanding/Sandblasting/Polishing/Lapping/Grinding.
2B is a smooth, moderately reflective cold rolled finish commonly produced in the same manner as 2D, except that the final light cold rolling pass is done by using polished rolls. 2B is the most economical and widely used stainless steel finish.
A #2B finish, also commonly referred to as a mill finish describes the unpolished cold rolled material as it is obtained from the producing mill. It may sometimes exhibit a slight luster from the rolling process, but no reflectivity.
What does a 32 surface finish mean? A surface finish of 32 means that the surface has an average roughness of 32 microinches. A roughness of 32 microns is the equivalent of 1/32 inch. The closest surface finish to a 32 finish would be a 6 surface finish and smoother.
3.2 m Ra. This is the standard commercial machine finish. It is suitable for most consumer parts and sufficiently smooth, but it contains visible cut marks. It is the default surface roughness applied unless otherwise is specified.
This is the general-purpose cold-rolled finish that can be used as is, or a preliminary step to polishing. 2B sheets do not typically have any protective coating and therefore may contain light marks from handling and shearing operations. An intermediate polished surface obtained by finishing with a 120-grit abrasive.
