The most common example of a rotating shift schedule are 8-hour shift rotations for teams offering 24/7 coverage. Usually, there are 4 teams to cover 24/7, and each team rotates through a 28 days sequence 7-day shifts, 2 days off, 7 swing shifts, 2 days off, 7-night shifts, and 3 days off.
The Continental Shift Pattern The continental shift schedule usually involves 4 teams that work 2 morning shifts, 2 swing shifts days, 2 night shifts, followed by 2 days off. To give an example, an employee who works the early shift on Monday can work the swing shift on Wednesday and the late shift on Friday.
Regular 4-on 4 off: This is a classic continuous working pattern based on 12 hour shifts. Participants work for four consecutive 12-hour days, followed by four consecutive days off, then four consecutive 12-hour nights, followed by four consecutive days off, then four more days and so on.
Example of a 4-on-4 off-shift schedule Employees work from Monday to Thursday, starting each shift at 8 AM and finishing at 8 PM for day shifts. For night shifts, they might start at 8 PM and finish at 8 AM. After these four days, employees get four days off.
The 0600-1400 shift may be called earlies, mornings, AM, or 6-2, while the 1400-2200 shift may be called lates, afters, afternoons, back shift or 2-10. The default pattern may cover: two x 40 hours = 80 hours per week or two x 37.5 hours per week. The rate of rotation does not need to be on alternate weeks.
1st Shift usually takes place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. 2nd Shift is worked between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. 3rd Shift typically takes place between the hours of 12 a.m. and 8 a.m.
A shift is the amount of time and time of day an employee is expected to work (ex: eight hour shift, ten hour shift, night shift, day shift). A schedule includes days of the week an employee is expected to work (ex: Monday to Friday, weekends only, etc.)
Tips for scheduling employees Be considerate: Get to know your team and which shifts they can work. Schedule to strengths: Build your shifts around your most reliable employees. Communicate clearly: Ensure that schedules are posted in a physical or virtual location thats convenient for all employees.
