The new blob-top soda bottles emerged because of the invention of fully automatic bottle-making machines. Blob-top bottles had a gravitating stopper that closed the bottle. Gravitating stoppers became popular because the stopper maintained the pressure inside the bottle, which kept the soda carbonated for longer.
If the bottle seam goes to the lips top, the bottle is likely a machine-produced bottle from 1910 to the modern era. If the seam goes to the necks top but stops before the lip, the bottle was likely produced from 1880 to 1910. However, entire bottle classes stand as exceptions to this rule.
One last category of bottle finish is called a tooled finish, the bottle is shaped from a single piece of glass, not added in a separate hand application. The glassmaker would use a variety of shaping tools to create the desired shape by repeatedly heating the neck of the bottle and without adding any extra glass.
Typical embossed marks include a makers mark or letters on the bottles side or base. You may also see mold lines or machine marks. Missing letters, uneven spacing, or other embossing errors provide clues to a bottles age.
Screw Top: usually date after 1920. Applied lip: date before 1900. Tooled lip: date after about 1890. Other: there were many varieties of tops as you can see in the examples, so if the top is not crown and not screw, then rely on the other two factors (Sides Seams and Base Type) to date your bottle.
Many people - collectors and archaeologists alike - too broadly use the term applied lip or applied finish to refer to any finish on a mouth-blown, non-machine-made bottle where the side mold seam does not terminate at the very top of the finish.
Molten glass was layered onto the top and a hand tool was used to shape the added glass, with reheating as needed (3). An applied-top bottle can be identified by seam lines that run under the top (3). The top also tends to be uneven and crude looking, especially on earlier bottles.
