A papers finish or the sheen and/or texture of a given sheet of paper plays a role in the readability of whats printed on a page, as well as the overall look of your paper project.
Finish type means a particular fin- ish, but does not include such variables as changes in color, pattern, print, or design, or minor variations in the amount or type of ingredients in the finish formulation. Examples of finish types would be starch finishes, resin finishes or parchmentized finishes.
Satin papers have a wider range of glossiness and this is often referred to with different terminology such as pearl; a slightly glossier satin, or lustre which has a slightly lower satin level and is closer to matt. Matt paper has no sheen or finish on the surface and has an extremely low reflection property.
Printed papers commonly have a top coat of a protective polymer to seal the print, provide scuff resistance, and sometimes gloss. Some coatings are processed by UV curing for stability. Most plastic coatings in the packaging industry are polyethylene (LDPE) and to a much lesser degree PET.
Paper finishes are also known as paper textures, and these terms both describe how a piece of paper feels in your hands. Is the paper smooth and slick to the touch? Is it rough and textured? Every paper texture is different, and every finish of paper has a different ideal use.
Unlike coated papers, uncoated paper is not treated with any surface sealants. This means the paper is more porous and absorbs ink differently, giving a softer, muted effect. As a result, uncoated papers have a more natural feel and absorb ink so that they can be written on.
