304 stainless steel 2B finish is a mill finish, which is smooth and NOT the brushed finish commonly seen on kitchen appliances. 304 stainless steel 2B finish is light gray in color. 304 stainless steel 2B finish may or may not have a protective film on one side to prevent scratching.
2D is a refined surface finish that is achieved by cold rolling, heat treating and pickling. This is a uniform, dull silver gray finish that is rougher than a No. 2B. Pickling or descaling is necessary after heat treatment to remove the chromium depleted dark surface layer and restore corrosion resistance.
2B Finish is a bright, cold-rolled finish commonly produced in the same manner as No. 2D, except that the final light-cold rolling pass is done using polished rolls. This produces a more reflective finish that resembles a cloudy mirror.
No. 1 Finish is produced by rolling stainless steel that has been heated prior to rolling (hot-rolling). This is followed by a heat treatment that produces a uniform microstructure (annealing) and ensures that the stainless steel will meet mechanical property requirements.
Type 304/304L is the basic 18-8 chromium-nickel stainless steel. It combines excellent mechanical properties with remarkable resistance to many corrosive agents encountered in industrial and domestic use. Number 1 finish is hot rolled as rolled, dull mill finish and not grained or polished.
There are two main categories of finishing processes and they largely depend on how they affect a workpiece. These processes are either removing/reshaping finishing or adding/altering finishing.
What are the different types of stainless steel finishes? Stainless finishes fall into three main categories: mill finishes, brushed and polished finishes, and bright annealed and temper rolled finishes.
Short-Grain (also known as the brushed finish/brush #4 or satin #4): the grain pattern is comprised of short-intermittent grit lines caused by the polishing or abrading by an abrasive belt. The short-grain is more prevalent in industrial end-uses where there is less of a demand for aesthetic or ornamental appeal.
2B stainless steel finish is perhaps the most popular stainless steel finish. This cold roll finish produces a clean matte finish. Its mainly non-reflective and smooth with excellent evenness. The stainless steel is annealed and pickled following the cold rolling process.
Three popular metal finishing techniques are anodising, powder coating and electroplating. Each has its strengths and limitations, and deliver different advantages for different applications.
