The most common cause for slow creation of AMIs or snapshots is the amount of dirty data that must be copied to Amazon S3. This dirty data is measured by the number of blocks. The following factors might result in a large number of dirty blocks: Size of the EBS volume.
Solution: Consider the time it takes to initialize a recovered volume when planning for disaster recovery. While creating an EBS volume based on a snapshot usually takes a few seconds only, it is necessary to read all blocks of a restored volume to ensure low latency throughput.
Snapshot is a point in time backup of specific volume while AMI is is backup of the entire EC2 instance that might have multiple attached volumes, exactly like virtual machines. With Packer, you can build automated machine images including AMIs for EC2, VMDK/VMX files for VMware, OVF exports for VirtualBox, etc.
If you changed a lot of data in your EBS or dont have a previous snapshot, it will take longer to create your AMI. Depending on the size of the volumes, it can take several minutes for the AMI-creation process to complete (sometimes up to 24 hours).
Multiple volumes queued for snapshot creation This means that Amazon EBS uses a shared bandwidth to send data to S3. Therefore, you might encounter delays if there are multiple volumes queued for snapshot creation. This typically happens if several snapshots are created at the top of the hour.
Note that the process of creating a snapshot can take several hours, depending on how much data you are capturing. While this backup is fairly simple, its also manual and wont fit if you are trying to backup several instances or create multiple recovery points.
