in creole parametric 9.0 the workflows for placing and editing surface finishes have been completely overhauled for context lets start out in creo parametric 8.0 here i am in a part model i will do this with model based definition back in that version and earlier if you wanted to create a surface finish you could go to the annotate tab here is the surface finish command when you clicked on that it would open up the file open dialog box to the folder of your various different symbols you can see that weve got unmachined there are a couple choices in here machined a couple choices in there and then we have our generic option let me grab the standard symbol then this would open up the surface finish dialog box where you have three different tabs for example we have the general tab i can choose my model references then for my placement type we have a drop down list and i can say hey lets do this with leaders and i can select the surface and then middle mouse button to locate it then we

One of the popular finishes is the Ra 30 surface finish or the #4 finish. It is also known as satin finish. It is an electronic polishing method and produces very low roughness. Hence, it is a very fine finish used in a variety of industries. It exhibits a 180-grit grain, which renders a dull finish.
A surface with a 250 RMS finish will have less machined grooves per inch and be rougher than a 32 RMS finish with more machined grooves per inch and look and feel smoother.
A common unit of measurement of surface roughness is by measuring the average roughness, which is often communicated as Ra. Ra is the calculated average between peaks and valleys on a surface. The lower the Ra value, the less variation between the peaks and troughs on a surface, making the surface smoother.
A 125 surface finish refers to a roughness average (Ra) of 125 microinches (in) or approximately 3.2 micrometers (m). This level of finish is commonly found in general machining and offers a balance between cost-effectiveness and good surface quality.
Click Insert Surface Finish. The GET SYMBOL menu appears. Select one of the following: Select one of these from the INST ATTACH menu: Respond to the prompts for the commands you have selected. Specify a value for the surface roughness.
An Ra of 32 -in would be typical of a machined surface, such as a brake rotor. An Ra of 32 microns, however, would be more like the surface of brick! A 32 -in Ra finish vs a 32 m Ra finish.
The 32 RMS finish takes about 3 times as long to make and is more easily scratched so we need to handle it specially. All that extra time required to machine a 32 RMS finish adds to the cost of the part. Your take-away: The surface finish of a part greatly affects the final price. If the finish is important, great.
