Quotation Marks: There are two types of quotation marks: single ( ) and double ( ). Single Quotation Marks are used to indicate dialogue within another quotation. Example: The girl answered her mother by saying, I dont want to go alone. She appeared to be shivering from the cold (4).
Often, both the opening and closing quotation marks appear to be identical when handwritten or when using certain computer programs. In American English, double quotation marks ( and ) are typically used to enclose a quotation while single marks ( and ) are typically used to enclose a quote within a quote.
The Unicode character (U+2019 RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK) is used for both a typographic apostrophe and a single right (closing) quotation mark.
The use of quotation marks, also called inverted commas, is very slightly complicated by the fact that there are two types: single quotes (` ) and double quotes ( ).
1. The final period or comma goes inside the quotation marks, even if it is not a part of the quoted material, unless the quotation is followed by a citation. If a citation in parentheses follows the quotation, the period follows the citation.
They are also sometimes used to emphasise a word or phrase, although this is usually considered incorrect. Quotation marks are written as a pair of opening and closing marks in either of two styles: single () or double ().
