Symbols. The basic surface finish symbol is a check mark with the point resting on the surface to be specified.
One of the popular finishes is the Ra 30 surface finish or the #4 finish. It is also known as satin finish. It is an electronic polishing method and produces very low roughness. Hence, it is a very fine finish used in a variety of industries. It exhibits a 180-grit grain, which renders a dull finish.
A surface with a 250 RMS finish will have less machined grooves per inch and be rougher than a 32 RMS finish with more machined grooves per inch and look and feel smoother.
The measure of the total space irregularities on the surface metal is known as Surface Roughness. It also depicts the number of peaks and valleys on a surface. The lower the number, the lower the irregularities, implying low surface roughness and a better surface finish.
Click Insert Surface Finish. The GET SYMBOL menu appears. Select one of the following: Select one of these from the INST ATTACH menu: Respond to the prompts for the commands you have selected. Specify a value for the surface roughness.
The standard surface finish for a machined part is usually 3.2 m Ra. This is the least expensive, and typically the roughest machining surface finish recommended for parts intended to experience vibrations, heavy loads, or amounts of stress.
The angle is the symbol for surface roughness, and this symbol indicates that the surface should be no rougher than 32.
The standard surface finish in machining varies depending on the application but typically falls within the range of Ra 0.8 to 3.2 m (32 to 125 in). This range balances manufacturing cost and part performance for a wide variety of applications.
