0.4 m Ra. This is the finest (least rough in technical terms) and highest quality surface roughness that are offered. It is suitable for parts that are under high tension or stress. It is also required for rapidly rotating components such as bearings and shafts.
Surface Finish Parameters a - average roughness value (Ra) b - production method, coating, note, or other additional information. c - roughness sampling length in millimeters or inches. d - direction of the surface lay.
A standard #4 finish could be about 0.8 (32) Ra, while a #4 Dairy or Sanitary finish have an roughness average between 0.3 (12) Ra and 0.4 (16) Ra.
Symbols. The basic surface finish symbol is a check mark with the point resting on the surface to be specified.
3.2 m Ra. This is the standard commercial machine finish. It is suitable for most consumer parts and sufficiently smooth, but it contains visible cut marks. It is the default surface roughness applied unless otherwise is specified.
Well, the 20 Ra is the roughness average of the product surface. Its a measurement of texture. As discussed in previous posts, a Ra value is the arithmetic mean of the vertical deviations of the roughness profile from a mean line. Basically, it measures the smoothness of a surface.
Ra is the arithmetic average of surface heights measured across a surface, Ra surface finish. Simply average the height across the microscopic peaks and valleys. Surface roughness can be measured by a profilometer, a surface profile measurement tool.
Ra values most commonly measure different surface roughness levels. A surface roughness chart can show different types of surface finish with Ra roughness values ranging from 12.5 m Ra (very rough) to 0.4 m Ra (very smooth).
