Every so often, I like to do what I call Echo Exercises. There are three parts to this: Echo, Reflection, and Imitation. Altogether, this exercise takes only about 35 minutes. Heres the breakdown of the Echo portion. First, I choose a book or short story I admire or even one I havent read yet but that has received critical acclaim. Oftentimes, Ill choose a book based on how much it resembles the tone Im going for in whatever story Im currently working on. For example, if Im writing a horror story with an old-fashioned writing style, I might choose a short story by H.P. Lovecraft. I set my timer for 15 minutes and begin typing out every word and comma from those first few pages, reading the sentences aloud as I do so.
