The ps command shows the process identification number (listed under PID ) for each process you own, which is created after you type a command. This command also shows you the terminal from which it was started ( TTY ), the cpu time it has used so far ( TIME ), and the command it is performing ( COMMAND ).
You can list running processes using the ps command (ps means process status). The ps command displays your currently running processes in real-time. This will display the process for the current shell with four columns: PID returns the unique process ID.
ps displays status information about processes, and optionally, the threads running under each process. By default, for each process that is associated with the users terminal, ps displays the process ID (PID), TTY, processor time used (TIME), and name of the command (COMM).
The ps command is a flexible tool for identifying the programs that are running on the system and the resources they are using. It displays statistics and status information about processes on the system, such as process or thread ID, I/O activity, CPU, and memory utilization.
The ps command, short for Process Status, is a command line utility that is used to display or view information related to the processes running in a Linux system.
The STAT column in the ps command output shows you the current status of the process. The two most common entries in the STAT column are S for sleeping and R for running. A sleeping process is one that isnt currently active. A running process is one that is currently executing on the CPU.
ps is based on the accumulate CPU usage (since the process started), where the %CPU is an average (total/time). top reports the (average) CPU usage since the last time it was sampled. CPU usage is currently expressed as the percentage of time spent running during the entire lifetime of a process.
A process is nothing but running instance of a program and each process has a unique PID on a Unix-like system. The easiest way to find out if process is running is run ps aux command and grep process name. If you got output along with process name/pid, your process is running.
