The last stage of rehabilitation is expected to last between 6-12 months post-surgery. Ideally, the individual should have full knee range of motion, is pain-free, has good neuromuscular control, and a foundation of strength and power.
Signs of ACL graft failure? The signs of ACL graft failure can include swelling, pain within the knee, locking within the knee, a mechanical block (which can be due to a bucket-handle tear of the meniscus), lack of full motion, and difficulty with twisting, turning, and pivoting.
An ACL tear is damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), located at the center of your knee. The tear may be partial (the ligament is torn a little) or total (the ligament is torn into two pieces). It will hurt if you tear your ACL. Your knee may give out (collapse or buckle) and you may hear or feel a pop.
Errors in sagittal plane. The placement of the femoral tunnel too anterior in the sagittal plane is the most common technical mistake related to bone drilling that may cause a failure of ACL reconstruction [Figure 2] (44).
Graft healing in ACL reconstruction has been conventionally categorized as a 3-stage process, namely early healing, proliferation, and maturation phase.
Approximately 200,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures occur in the United States annually. Primary ACL reconstruction is recognized as a successful procedure, but failure has been shown to occur in approximately 10% of patients.
Treatment for a failed ACL may require staged procedures, and could involve removing old fixation devices, and possibly bone grafting to correct widened or poorly positioned bone tunnels or sockets. In some cases, a realignment may be necessary so that the knee is in alignment with the rest of the lower body.
Symptoms of ACL graft failure Patients may complain of a limp while walking and a feeling of looseness in the knee. There may be knee pain that may increase with activities. Patients may complain of knee stiffness, knee swelling, or instability while activities of daily living.
