The CRAP Test for evaluating websites. What is CRAP? CRAP is an easy to remember acronym for the steps you need to follow when deciding whether or not the information on a website is credible or valid. CRAP stands for Currency, Reliability, Authority, and Purpose So what does that mean? Lets start with Currency How recent is the information? Look for a date on the article. You can usually find it near the title or author name. Sometimes the date is at the bottom of the article. If you cant find a date there try looking at the URL. Often on news sites or blogs the URL will be formatted to include the year, month, and day that a specific article was posted. How recently has the website been updated? To see how recently a website has been updated try looking at the very bottom of the page in the footer area. Usually there will be a year or range of years showing how long the site has existed. If the site is no longer being updated you will be able to see what year the site owner ceased

To tell if it is still good, start with a visual inspection. Discard finishes that have become thick, rubbery, stringy or separated, as well as those with a skunky odor or obvious mold growth. Ditto for water-based paint or finish that looks like cottage cheese.
Because it permeates the wood, it is a finish that makes it extremely water-resistant. Easy to apply and maintain, Stain does not come off, since it is absorbed by the wood and does not form a layer of a protective film. Its uses are similar to varnishes and are also widely used in roofs.
While some stains can last up to five years, postponing re-staining a wood surface for too long can cause the job to become more complex and labour intensive. Even decks that are stripped and re-stained will still require maintenance every couple of years.
Let water-based stains dry for two to three hours and oil-based stains for four to six hours before applying a polyurethane sealer. The best way to get a smooth finish is to apply the first coat of sealer, let it dry, and then lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper before applying a second coat.
Oil-based stain can be kept for 1 year if the cans have been opened, but unopened cans will last 2 - 3 yrs. Water-based stain will last 1 year, if opened, and 2 years, if unopened. Oil-based varnishes will be good for 1 year, opened or unopened.
The longer the stain is left on, the deeper and richer the color will be. For consistent color, use careful timing. Never allow any stain to dry on the wood surfaceit will prevent the clear finish from adhering and cause other issues.
Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but a finish protects the stained wood from scratches and keeps it from fading over time. If applying a polyurethane wood finish with a brush, apply one to two coats. If using a spray can, hold 8 to 12 inches from the surface and apply two or three light coats.
