Without a protective top coat, wood can be damaged easily due to contact with water, food, or sharp objects. A polyurethane top coat protects the wood from scratches, stains and water damage. A Spar Varnish should be used on outdoor wood to protect it from weather damage and UV rays.
Bare wood, when left unfinished, keeps your furniture with a natural wood look but the risk is exposing it to harsh elements, even if its indoors, such as light, dust, moisture and water damage, making it more susceptible to stains, warping and cracking.
Applying a wood finish is an essential step to protect the woods surface. Finishing wood prevents swelling and cracking, protects against stains and enhances the appearance of the wood.
The difference between stain and finish is actually quite simple. Wood stains add color to natural wood, while finishes seal the wood and protect it from moisture. You know when you are shopping for furniture, and you see a table with a finish thats so pristine it still looks wet?
1 Answer. Not finishing wood is perfectly fine. It will be more prone to collecting dirt and stains than finished wood, but if you dont mind that, its still fine.
Remember: a stain provides color, but not protection. Once the stain has dried, apply a clear finish to protect both the stain and the woodand to make the final results look even more beautiful.
Not wiping the excess stain and leaving it may leave extra pigment between the final finish and the wood . Finish needs to be able to grab the wood to adhere . Another possibility depends on how you are going bro apply the top coat . Brushing it you may pull the stain and cause streaks.
