Rubbing or brushing against the direction of the grain will help fill deep pores with stain. Apply a liberal amount of stain, giving the wood an ample amount to absorb. Pay attention to how long you leave the stain on the wood before wiping off any unabsorbed liquid.
Disadvantages of staining wooden worktops It can get cloudy over time, particularly if the surface does not have a top coat of hard-wax oil protection. Unprotected stained surfaces are vulnerable to unwanted marks (i.e., water and acidity)
Dos Always prepare the wood with a light sanding. Apply Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to ensure an even stain color (see Wood Preparation for other tips). Stir the can thoroughly. Test any stain you are considering. Apply a second coat.
Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but a finish protects the stained wood from scratches and keeps it from fading over time. If applying a polyurethane wood finish with a brush, apply one to two coats. If using a spray can, hold 8 to 12 inches from the surface and apply two or three light coats.

Because it permeates the wood, it is a finish that makes it extremely water-resistant. Easy to apply and maintain, Stain does not come off, since it is absorbed by the wood and does not form a layer of a protective film. Its uses are similar to varnishes and are also widely used in roofs.
Find a wood sample of the same grain and species. Using a sample for comparison can help you find a more accurate match. The woods grain and species can both affect how the stain will appear once its dry. If you have any excess material in that same grain and species, use that as the sample.
If needed, lightly sand between coats to eliminate bumps and other imperfections before adding more coats. Always sand between coats with 320 grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish. Wipe off the dust with a tack rag before applying the second coat.
