The difference between stain and finish is actually quite simple. Wood stains add color to natural wood, while finishes seal the wood and protect it from moisture. You know when you are shopping for furniture, and you see a table with a finish thats so pristine it still looks wet?
A stain is a type of finish that is applied to wood to alter its appearance. It may change the color, enhance the. grain or protect the wood from damage. A stain is applied to wood during the finishing process. It is pigmented to change the color of the wood, and there are several colors of stains available.
Let water-based stains dry for two to three hours and oil-based stains for four to six hours before applying a polyurethane sealer. The best way to get a smooth finish is to apply the first coat of sealer, let it dry, and then lightly sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper before applying a second coat.
Sealing your wood isnt necessary, per se, but it does protect your investment. It prevents wood from becoming discolored or stained by liquids and from absorbing water. It can also provide a protective barrier against wear and tear. Sealed wood has a more finished and polished look that many property owners prefer.
To properly answer your question of Do you have to seal stained wood?, the answer is no. However, if you want to protect your wood and give it a polished finish, its smart to do so. Its worth taking the extra steps and applying a wood stain sealer.
Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but a finish protects the stained wood from scratches and keeps it from fading over time. If applying a polyurethane wood finish with a brush, apply one to two coats. If using a spray can, hold 8 to 12 inches from the surface and apply two or three light coats.
Once dry, the stain wont rub off on the bedding. However, a sealer of some sort (polyurethane, shellac, etc.) will make the surface much easier to clean, resist staining, wear better, etc.
Bare wood, when left unfinished, keeps your furniture with a natural wood look but the risk is exposing it to harsh elements, even if its indoors, such as light, dust, moisture and water damage, making it more susceptible to stains, warping and cracking.
