After selecting premium hardwood, we get serious about sanding using a combination of top-quality machines and hand-sanding. Then comes the finish line: stain, sealer, topcoat, and glaze. Stains enhance the natural beauty of each type of wood, including characteristics like wood grain, knots, and mineral streaks.
If needed, lightly sand between coats to eliminate bumps and other imperfections before adding more coats. Always sand between coats with 320 grit sandpaper to get a smooth finish. Wipe off the dust with a tack rag before applying the second coat.
Apply the Wood Stain with a Foam Brush or lint-free cloth (You can also use a regular bristle brush). Wait for it to soak into the wood and then simply wipe off any excess with a clean cloth. The longer you leave the stain to soak in before wiping any excess, the darker the colour will be.
Repair As Needed with Wood Putty. The steps to staining wood begin with examining what you plan to stain. Sand Thoroughly. When preparing wood for stain, youll need to sand its surface. Wet the Wood. Apply Conditioner or Filler as Needed. Stain the Wood. Remove Excess Stain. Apply Sealant as Needed. Wood Stain Types.
Apply oil-based stains with a paintbrush or clean rag. Apply water-based stains with a foam brush or synthetic bristle brush. For deep grain woods, work the stain into the grain by working in a circular motion. Otherwise, apply the stain evenly in the direction of the wood grain.
Staining before assembly prevents glue from getting on the wood surface which tends to seal out stains and produce uneven color.
With a staining brush, work both with the grain and against it. Dont worry about being neat; all that matters is getting a nice, even, liberal coat over the wood. Wipe the stain off immediately if youd like a lighter tone. But for a deeper tone, leave the stain on the wood for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off.
Use a Foam Brush for Corners and Large Projects For corners, nooks, crevices, or any other hard to docHub spots, use a foam brush to apply the stain first. Then, wipe off the excess with a lint free rag. Foam brushes are great for nooks and crannies because of their angled tips.
