in this video I want to talk about finishing and the difference between lacquer and something like catalyzed varnish which you see in front of you on my bench now if a lot of you have probably never heard of catalyzed varnish before have never used it and dont know anything about it and Im going to explain the differences between lacquer and catalyzed varnish lets start with lacquer lacquer is really a good product Im not knocking lacquer its a nice hard finish it goes down easy and its inexpensive and really easy to use one of the things Im not crazy about lacquer is the fact that its very susceptible to moisture so in other words if you were to put a sweaty glass on a piece thats been finished with lacquer and its there for any period of time its going to leave a ring thats not going away its permanent its there thats not the case with catalyzed varnish the I dont care what chemical you have in your home youre not going to hurt catalyzed varnish with it you can leave

The difference between stain and finish is actually quite simple. Wood stains add color to natural wood, while finishes seal the wood and protect it from moisture. You know when you are shopping for furniture, and you see a table with a finish thats so pristine it still looks wet?

Applying a topcoat sealer is not required, but a finish protects the stained wood from scratches and keeps it from fading over time. If applying a polyurethane wood finish with a brush, apply one to two coats. If using a spray can, hold 8 to 12 inches from the surface and apply two or three light coats.
Once applied, Conversion Varnish will typically be ready to recoat in 40-60 minutes. Cure time is 7 days.
Conversion varnish (CV) is a lacquer containing a hardening agent. Its commonly used on cabinets and woodwork for its protective coating and clear finish. Because its both durable and visually appealing, conversion varnish is a great choice for refinishing your kitchen cabinets or drawer fronts.
Part of that process will involve using a 2-4 wide brush with white conversion varnish applied to the face, in THIN streaky brush strokes. Somewhat to replicate paint in the grain.
With growing demands both in quality as well as properties finishing techniques can be divided into three different parts: Temporary Finish. Semi-durable Finish. Permanent Finish.
What is a Varnish? While a stain deeply penetrates wood, a varnish remains on the outside of your surfaces, forming a protective barrier. A varnish is usually clear and transparent, and it will harden along the outer layer of your wood. Some varnishes do include colour to enhance or alter the wood shade.
