The longer a stain is left untreated, the less likely it is to be removed. When a spill first occurs, it sits on the surface of the fabric, but over time, that spill can start to react with the fabric causing the fabric to actually change colors.
Mix a teaspoon of salt with several drops of water and apply onto the wood stain in a gentle, circular motion. Wipe off the residue with a damp cloth, and youre done.
Oil-based stains will generally take 24-72 hours to fully cure. Water-based stains dont penetrate wood as well as oil-based stains, and they generally cost more. However, they do have other advantages over their oil-based counterparts.
Pretreating old and fresh stains can play a massive role in getting stains out of clothes. Laundry pretreatment helps remove stains in the wash the first time around. Using stain removers as pretreaters can also help you remove old set-in stains from clothes.
Vinegar is a great solution. Especially on white fabrics, vinegar can tackle stubborn stains by being added directly to your laundry or used as part of a pre-treating soaking solution, says Morgan LaLonde, laundry brand manager for Whirlpool.
Spills such as coffee, tea, sodas, and other drinks can also cause permanent stains, especially on wool, some nylons, silk, and cotton. Even stain resistant nylon carpets can be permanently stained by HOT coffee, HOT tea, and other common foods, as well as bleach household chemicals or medicines.
Douse the stain with white vinegar, then apply a paste made of equal parts baking soda and vinegar. If this doesnt work, immerse the item overnight in a bucket of water containing a few tablespoons of detergent and vinegar. Rinse and wash the following morning.
Old Stains There is often the effect of time upon a stain: the older the stain, the harder it is to remove. Drycleaners who are trained in stain removal prefer to work on fresh stains which have not had time to set or react with the fabric, dyes, finish, or atmosphere.
