Wipe the stain off immediately if youd like a lighter tone. But for a deeper tone, leave the stain on the wood for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off. Be sure to wipe off all the excess stain going in the direction of the grain of the wood.
The longer the stain is left on, the deeper and richer the color will be. For consistent color, use careful timing. Never allow any stain to dry on the wood surfaceit will prevent the clear finish from adhering and cause other issues.
With a staining brush, work both with the grain and against it. Dont worry about being neat; all that matters is getting a nice, even, liberal coat over the wood. Wipe the stain off immediately if youd like a lighter tone. But for a deeper tone, leave the stain on the wood for 5 to 10 minutes before wiping it off.
Did you wipe away the excess after you applied your coat of stain? If you didnt, the stain may still be tacky. You should not apply your clear topcoat until the stain is no longer tacky and has been allowed to dry at least as long as the label recommends.
Its only important that you wipe off all the excess before the stain dries. Blotching caused by fast drying. Lacquer, water-based and dye stains dry rapidly. So they could lead to this type of blotching if some of the stain dries before you have time to get it all wiped off.
After staining your wood, it is important to wait for the stain to fully dry before applying a polyurethane finish. This typically takes about 24 hours, but it is always best to check the instructions on your specific stain product for more accurate drying times.
Give it a few more days to see if it improves. Another possibility is that the stain was old or came from a bad batch. In either case, if the tackiness doesnt go away, wipe the wood down with mineral spirits or naphtha to remove most of the stain, let it dry thoroughly, then try again using a fresh can of stain.
With staining, youll know if youve over-applied your deck stain because there will be sticky patches or puddles that just arent dryingthe wood has absorbed all it can, so the remaining stain has nowhere to go.
