Once every 4-5 years youll also need to get your dock sealed if its not painted. By choosing a natural sealer youll protect your wood, boost its natural appeal, and maintain the integrity of your dock, keeping it in tip-top shape. Simply spray two or three coats and let the sealant take care of the rest.
For many traditionalists, wood decking such as red cedar or IPE hardwood is the only way to go when it comes to decking for docks. This is because these types of woods contain natural oils and tannins to resist rot, decay and insects without having to be pre-treated with potentially dangerous or harmful chemicals.
But in a head-to-head of painting vs. staining the deck, paint generally comes out as the more durable and colorfast finish, lasting 10 years or longer before requiring re-application. Oil-based paints offer the best protection from moisture, whereas latex paints provide the best defense against UV-related fading.
Deck Painting Paint allows you more color options, as where stain is limited to shades of brown. Because paint fills gaps and cracks, it hides the flaws of a weathered or old deck much better than stain does. Its easier to clean a painted deck rather than a stained one.
If the deck is made with pressure-treated woods, the stain will adhere better than paint. If pressure-treated woods are used, stain seeps into the deck, becoming a part of the deck rather than an added layer, which means that it wont chip, crack or flake.
A quality paint job, finished by a trusted professional, can last for ten years before needing repainting. Conversely, stains need reapplied every few years because they dont offer the same protection against outdoor elements.
Sealing your wooden dock is the best way to preserve its natural beauty and ensure it lasts as long as possible. In addition, by preventing moisture-related damage, mold, and dry rot, your dock will be much better prepared to handle the elements after being sealed.
Seal Wooden Docks to Prevent Dry Rot Water can work its way into wooden docks and cause rotting to occur. If youve invested in a wooden dock, find a sealer that will protect it from rainwater as well as water from the lake or river where you use it. A good sealer will keep moisture out and stop a dock from rotting.
Deck Size. At an average cost between $3 and $5 per square foot, the biggest factor in the cost of staining a deck is the size. A 100 square foot deck will cost between $300 and $500 while a 500 square foot deck will cost between $1,500 and $2,500 in staining costs.
Re-stain your deck every year Important annual maintenance of your boat dock should include re-staining. Use a water-based stain that wont hurt the fish and fowl that live near your dock. As a general rule of thumb, its best to re-stain during cooler months when water levels at your dock tend to be lower.
