Typical spacing from hole center to hole center is generally 0.100” or greater, even for DIP processors. Such generous spacing makes through-hole PCBs easy to hand-solder.
These via-in-pad guidelines include: Use the smallest via diameter possible. ... Follow the component manufacturer's recommendations for component placement and via capping or filling. Use micro-vias that only go through one layer of the board. Have your fabricator cap the underside (non-component side) with solder mask.
This drilling technology implements drill bits. The smallest hole diameter that can be drilled by these drills is about 6 mils (0.006”).
Via in pad is the design practice of placing a via in the copper landing pad of a component. Compared to standard PCB via routing, via in pad allows a design to use smaller component pitch sizes and further reduce the PCBs overall size.
Mechanical vias are made with twist drills, and the minimum drill diameter is 5.9 mils. Drills smaller than 5.9 mils are not practical in a production setting due to their short wear life, high rotational speed requirements, and tendency to break and wander off target.
The typical layout shows a via capture pad size of 0.660 mm, a via size of 0.254 mm, and an inner space and trace of 0.102 mm. With this layout, only one trace can be routed between the vias.
(2) Diameter Tolerance is normally +/- 3 mils for 12 mil diameter holes or larger; +0/-10 mils for smaller holes. The distance between pad and via must be at least 25 mils to prevent bridging.
drill is the finished size of the actual hole. diameter is the outer diameter of the copper surrounding the hole. The annular ring of the via will be the (diameter-drill)/2.
Vias have very low resistance and even a 0.35 mm drill via can safely carry 2 amps of current. Furthermore, their resistance can be reduced by filling them with solder.
Minimum-sized vias (0.25-0.3 mm) are typically preferred. Smaller epoxy-filled vias require less material; however, depending on board thickness, smaller vias may necessitate laser drilling.
