If you are younger than 30, you can likely be tested for cervical cancer every other year instead of yearly. If you are older than 30 and have had 3 normal Pap tests in a row, you can be tested once every 3 years.
Pap Smear (Cytology) Results Classification Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. Atypical glandular cells (AGC).
The Pap smear shouldn't hurt, but it might be uncomfortable. The good news is, it's over quickly.
SPECIMEN COLLECTION FOR PAP 11. Keep the preserved specimen at room temperature or refrigerated (2-8ºC). It is recommended to return the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.
A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) screens for cervical cancer. The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
Your Pap smear To conduct a Pap smear, we use a thin, gentle brush to collect cells from your cervix. We insert the brush into your cervix through the speculum. It takes us only a second or two to gather some cervical cells with the brush. A Pap smear doesn't hurt, although the speculum may feel slightly uncomfortable.
Smears must be fixed immediately before they dry. A 95% solution of ethyl alcohol or spray fixative is used to fix the slide. The slides should be labeled in pencil with the patient's name AND date of birth and a properly completed Pap smear requisition should accompany the slide.
Pap tests can stop at the age of 70 if you have had 3 or more normal tests in the previous 10 years. If you have had a hysterectomy, talk to your doctor to see if you still need a Pap test.
Pap test. In a Pap test, your doctor uses a vaginal speculum to hold your vaginal walls apart and to see the cervix. Next, a sample of cells from your cervix is collected using a small cone-shaped brush and a tiny plastic spatula (1 and 2).
There are two types of tests: the Pap test and the HPV test. For both, the doctor or nurse collects cells from the surface of the cervix. With the Pap test, the lab checks the sample for cancer cells or abnormal cells that could become cancer later. With the HPV test, the lab checks for HPV infection.
