Complimentary Close The complimentary close for a reference letter is like any other professional letter. You can sign off using an appropriate word or phrase (Sincerely, Regards, Kind regards, or similar), leave a space for your handwritten signature and type your full name.
The closing of the letter should briefly summarize previous points and clearly state that you recommend the candidate for employment (or graduate school, etc.). Finally, you want to give them your contact information in case they want to contact you directly.
How to Write (Format) A recommendation letter should fill an entire page (usually 400 500 words) and contain an introduction, two (2) body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The student should be described in a way that highlights both their academic skills and personal qualities.
It works fine with undergrad admissions, grad admissions, and faculty/tenure/promotion letters. The only times when Ive had to print out hard copies were for some scholarship foundations, and immigration lawyers.
If you are writing a personal letter of reference, include a salutation (Dear Dr. Smith, Dear Mr. Jones, etc.). If you are writing a general reference letter, say To Whom it May Concern or simply dont include a salutation.
The last thing you need to do is to use a formal closing to end the reference letter. You can use a standard phrase, such as Sincerely, Respectfully, or Best regards, followed by your name, title, and contact information.
Close with a statement of recommendation Your final statement should declare your recommendation. For example, For these reasons, I recommend Susan for this position and feel she would be a worthy asset to any organization.
