How to Finish print in raw

Years ago when I first got into digital raw photography, my photo editing process was.. well, pretty much non-existent. I would open a raw image in Lightroom, I would scroll through the Develop panel, and I would move sliders left and right without really understanding what I should be doing and in what order in order to create a photograph out of the gray, dull, RAW image that I saw in front of me. After plenty of failed attempts, I realized that my process or lack thereof needed structure. A series of steps, each with its own clearly defined goal, so that anytime I would sit down to edit a photo, I would know where to start, where I was going next, and where I would ultimately finish. So today Im going to share with you my own 10 step RAW photo processing framework. It sounds rather official butits really not. These are simply the steps which work best for me and the way that I approach photo processing. By the way the focus of this video will be on the framework itself, so

Better detail and dynamic range: If you have a high-end camera with a large megapixel count, you will see a noticable difference between the cameras RAW mode and JPEG mode. RAW provides far more image information, allowing you to capture more detail and greater dynamic range from your camera sensor.
The ideal file format choice for print is TIFF, followed closely by PNG.
One of the largest benefits of RAW is the ability to recover shadows and highlights in post-processing without bringing in the grainy noise usually associated with high ISO settings. RAWs are very forgiving if you have severely underexposed or overexposed areas.
RAW is a format found on many DSLR, mirrorless and compact cameras you can even find the setting on some smartphones these days. Its essentially an uncompressed file format. Click the menu button on your camera. Click Image Quality. Click RAW. Click Set.
Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
It is usually better to convert raw files and edit them in an application like docHub Photoshop or Photoshop Elements before making prints. Why Shoot Raw Files? Raw files are like digital negatives. Raw files allow you to extract much more image data to work with. Raw files dont have any white balance settings.
Most consumer photo labs will not print raw files. Professional labs also do not print from raw files. The acceptable file format for print is high resolution JPEG or in some cases TIFF both of which you can easily export copies of from your raw files.
Similarly, if you think it might be important later, shoot RAW. If disk space is not an issue, shoot RAW. If youre not sure, shoot RAW. You can always convert RAW to a format with a smaller file size, but you cant go the other way.
Most consumer photo labs will not print raw files. Professional labs also do not print from raw files. The acceptable file format for print is high resolution JPEG or in some cases TIFF both of which you can easily export copies of from your raw files.
With JPEG files, the white balance is already balanced. This is a big reason why JPEGs look more finished than their RAW counterparts straight off the camera. A change you can make in a one-step increment in Lightroom, like white balance, you can only make in a five-step increment with JPEGs, Morrison points out.
