Shooting in Log has many advantages. It gives you the most dynamic range your camera can offer and gives you a lot of flexibility in color correction. Exposing for Log, in many ways, is easier than traditional video gammasits both harder to overexpose and has a lot more wiggle room to fix later.
So how do we expose LOG correctly? Expose to the right (meaning to the right of the histogram i.e slight over exposure). Use an 18 percent grey card. Send a normal REC 709 curve to the monitor/eye peice and expose that as you normally would.
To make such effects possible, images must be shot with a wide dynamic range and wide color reproduction range. The S-Log gamma curve and the S-Gamut color reproduction are used for shooting such images.
LOG footage was invented by Kodak with their Cineon system for scanning film. This system scanned film into a LOG format that corresponded with the density of the original film, thus maximizing the amount of information from the film that could be stored in a video format.
The wide tone area captured by S-Log makes it especially effective when shooting subjects which tend to experience loss of details in shadows or overblown highlights. Scenes which were impossible to shoot before, such as those with strong sunlight and dark shadows can be captured in far more detail.
The many advantages of shooting in S-Log Shoot with a combination of S-Log and S-Gamut, and your material can retain a wider color gamut, dynamic range, and tonal range than with traditional techniques. This image information provides exceptional flexibility in color grading, as you give scenes the look you envisioned.
Log is a VERY flat picture profile which retains a hell of a lot of contrast information in the image. Log is so flat it can become difficult to properly judge a shot because you are looking at something which looks so milky and lacking in colour. In this instance, an external monitor will help.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
Shooting in log allows your cameras sensor to capture and output more detail. Log delivers a broader dynamic range without the extreme memory and post-production demands of shooting in full RAW.
Log is video and has things like white balance baked into it. Theyre very much not the same; however, theyre both designed to get the most information out of the sensor. Raw is getting everything the sensor has to offer; likewise, Log curves are designed to get the most tonal range out of the sensor.
