Your lien is only valid for 180 calendar days from the date it is registered on the land title 3. Description. Establishes payment deadlines for owners, contractors and sub-contractors for work done or materials furnished for the improvement of real property, and establishes procedures to file a lien against such property or initiate adjudication in order to collect accounts that are due and owing.
You can claim a lien against personal property that has been left under someones possession, such as a rented storage facility, or if you have performed labour or service on it and have not been compensated. There is no requirement to register these types of liens in the Personal Property Registry System.
A contractor might file a mechanics lien if a property owner reneges on paying a portion of the amount due for the work performed. A subcontractor could likewise file a mechanics lien if a primary contractor fails to make proper payment for their work and materials.
Each province has different rules about the time limit of a lien. In Alberta, for example, your lien is valid for 180 days from the date the lien was placed. In Ontario, liens are only valid for 90 days from the date of last on site working.
