Beginning in the mid-1800s, photographers used glass plates to capture images – collodion wet plate and gelatin dry plate. Collodion wet plate negatives were in use from about 1851 until the 1880s.

Glass prints are a unique way to show off your photos. Instead of just seeing them on a computer or phone screen, you can see them in all their glory on a piece of glass that's mounted to a frame. Not only do they look great, but they also last longer than traditional prints.
Shutterfly offers their glass prints in both a flat and a curved option. Although their sizing is limited (at this time, Shutterfly only offers 5” x 7”, 7” x 7”, 7” x 10”, and 10” x 12” glass prints), each print is offered at a very affordable and reasonable price. What is this?
The ambrotype (from Ancient Greek: ἀμβροτός — “immortal”, and τύπος — “impression”) also known as a collodion positive in the UK, is a positive photograph on glass made by a variant of the wet plate collodion process. Like a print on paper, it is viewed by reflected light.
Ambrotypes were most popular in the mid-1850s to mid-1860s. Cartes de visite and other paper print photographs, easily available in multiple copies, replaced them. An ambrotype is comprised of an underexposed glass negative placed against a dark background. The dark backing material creates a positive image.
Small: 4.8" x 6.4" (0.38 lbs) - $30. Medium: 7.2" x 9.6" (0.68 lbs) - $50. Classic: 10.8" x 14.4" (1.41 lbs) - $80. Large: 15.6" x 20.8" (3 lbs) - $119.
Every Fracture print starts out as a piece of durable glass, cut and hand-prepared for each print size. Ink is then sprayed directly onto the glass and instantly cured through our special UV process. A bright, opaque layer of white ink is applied directly beneath the color layer.
Fracture prints are not considered archival—though they will last a very long time if kept indoors and not exposed to extreme humidity or poor handling.
n. A positive photograph on glass made using the wet-collodion process, often hand-tinted and mounted in a hinged case.
