So how do we know whether to add a ch or a tch? The answer is in the sound that comes directly before the /ch/. If there is a short vowel sound directly before the /ch/, it is spelled with tch. If its not a short vowel sound, its spelled with ch. Take the word catch for example. If we listen to the sound immediately before the /ch/, we can hear that catch has the /a/ sound. Since this is a short vowel sound, we must add tch. In the word bunch, while there is a short vowel sound /a/, the sound immediately before the /ch/ is /n/, so we just add ch. In the word docHub, the two vowels before the /ch/ combine to make the long vowel sound /ea/ This means we just add ch.
