A Form 1099-MISC is used to report payments made in the course of a trade or business to another person or business who is not an employee. The form is required among other things, when payments of $10 or more in gross royalties or $600 or more in rents or compensation are paid.
Enter the name and TIN of the payment recipient on Form 1099-MISC. For example, if the recipient is an individual beneficiary, enter the name and social security number of the individual; if the recipient is the estate, enter the name and employer identification number of the estate.
1099-MISC unrelated to self-employment A non-work 1099-MISC would be for things like: Prize money. Lawsuit settlements. Research studies.
Depending on the nature of these payments, the IRS requires the amounts paid to be reported on either Form 1099-MISC in the case of payments for rent, royalties, prizes and awards, substitute payments in lieu of dividends and other items or 1099-NEC if the payments represent nonemployee compensation.
If your income is not self-employment income, you do not need to use Schedule C to report business income. Instead, the 1099-MISC income will go onto Line 8 of Schedule 1 as Other Income that is only subject to regular tax and not subject to self-employment taxes.
If youre not an employee of the payer, and youre not in a self-employed trade or business, you should report the income on line 8j of Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Additional Income and Adjustments to IncomePDF and any allowable expenses on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions.
