The margin property sets or returns the margins of an element. This property can take from one to four values: One value, like: div {margin: 50px} - all four margins will be 50px. Two values, like: div {margin: 50px 10px} - the top and bottom margins will be 50px, left and right margins will be 10px.
Border - A border that goes around the padding and content. Margin - Clears an area outside the border.
The margin clears an area around an element (outside the border), but the padding clears an area around the content (inside the border) of an element. it means that your element does not know about its outside margins, so if you are developing dynamic web controls, I recommend that to use padding vs margin if you can.
You can remove this margin by setting the top and left margin to zero. Like the padding and border, the sizes of specific sides of the margin can be set using margin-left , margin-right , margin-top , and margin-bottom .
Padding - The inner space between the content and the border of your box. Border - The perimeter of the box. Borders can be invisible or they could be a thick colored line like the green one pictured above. Margin - The outer space (or lack of space) surrounding the box.
Here we have: Defined the space between the image border and the text by defining the top margin. Defined the left margin. Defined the top padding between the image and the border. In the following code for the image property, we set the: image width to 300px. border to 2px. padding to 0px. margin to 0px.
In HTML margins work the same way in giving space away from the edge of the page. Borders simply wrap the element. A border can wrap immediately around an element, or it may look further away from an element if more padding has been applied to the element. Padding provides space around the element.
The main difference between CSS padding and margin is that padding is the space between the elements content and border (within the element itself), while margin is the space around the border of an element.
