Margin - The margin of the crown is where the edge of the crown transitions to the tooth. This is typically right at or just under the gum line. If the margin is closed then the crown is sealed around the tooth.
Four cervical finish line types [27], namely, feather-edged, shoulder, mini chamfer, and chamfer, are commonly used in single-tooth restoration. For deciduous crowns, the feather-edged finish line type is usually used for SSCs.
In lower anterior teeth or periodontically-treated teeth, the knife-edge finish line appears to be the treatment of choice. In short teeth and preparations for porcelain and porcelain-gold crowns, the full shoulder bevelled preparation is the treatment of choice.
The type of finishing line recommended for full metal crown is chamfer finishing line; therefore, a round end tapered fissure bur is used in the preparation. Knife edge finishing line may also be used.
The PJC is more fragile and less likely to resist fracture than a PFM, and is generally contraindicated if the patient has an aggressive bite or a clenching or bruxing habit.
The margins of primary, full-coverage crowns can be divided into four categories concerning cervical finish types [15,27,28], namely: feather-edged, shoulder, mini chamfer, and chamfer.
It is recommended that chamfer finish lines for all metal crowns possess a minimum depth of approximately 0.3mm (Goodacre, 2004). The following types of finish line have historically been used with metal ceramic crowns: chamfer, bevelled chamfer, shoulder and bevelled shoulder.
Heavy chamfer finishing line This type of finishing line provides a 90 cavo-surface line angle with a large radius internal angle, so it provides better support for the ceramic crown. It can be used with porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crown and All Ceramic crown.
