Taking photos before the wedding is a new practice, kicking out the old tradition that the couple cant see each other until the ceremony. This gives you the freedom and the time to take photos before the wedding celebration actually begins.
A break of 60 to 90 minutes is fine. If youre moving onto a different spot in town for the party, having an hour between the end of the ceremony and the start of the reception is fine-itll give everyone time to leisurely make their way to the second venue, or to even go home or to their hotel room for a short break.
While roughly 90% of couples choose to take their photos before the ceremony, there are still some who want to be traditional and not let the groom see the bride until she is walking down the aisle.
So the absolute essentials are: Both your names. Include your date. Tell them about your venue. Include your email address, your phone number and tell them a good time to call. Tell them about your wedding. If you are wanting bespoke, mention that. If you are on a budget, mention that.
Allow 30 minutes post-ceremony for photos of you and your groom. If you did have a first look, youll still want 15-20 minutes post-ceremony for just the two of you. Save photos of very large groups (like classmates, coworkers, and large extended family groups) for the reception.
ing to Gottsman, guests should never post pictures of the newlyweds until they get the go-ahead. Unless stated otherwise (for example, theres a wedding hashtag sign encouraging guests to Instagram photos), its up to the couple to post the first picture, which also includes the wedding venue and fellow guests.
The most common option is after the ceremony and before the reception. This usually coincides with the end of the afternoon/beginning of the evening, and with our beloved sunset. I am pretty sure I can vouch for almost every other wedding photographer on the planet when I say that this is our favorite option.
Short answer: typically, no. After reception formalities are over (toasts, dances, cake cutting), you dont really need your photographer to hang around for much longer unless dancing photos are super important to you (1 hour of dancing coverage can be plenty).
Know how long wedding photos will take. For the best results, photographers agree that wedding party portraits take about 30 minutes, family portraits take about 30 minutes (if youre sticking with only photographing close family), and couple portraits take between 45 minutes to an hour.
Between the ceremony and reception: This is probably the most popular option; the newlyweds and wedding party gather at the front of the ceremony site and take pictures while guests wait outside or travel to the reception for cocktail hour. (Dont make your guests wait for hours though!)
