Heavy Chamfer: Similar to Chamfer finish line but comes with a 90 degrees cavosurface angle with a large radius rounded internal angle. In case of metal restorations, a bevel is added to the finish line. Indications: It is used in Ceramic crowns and for metal crowns with a bevel.
Your jawbone fuses with the implant to provide a secure platform for a prosthesis (artificial tooth). Abutments are connecting pieces that join the prosthesis to the implants. You may need an abutment and a prosthesis as part of your treatment.
Chamfer margins are indicated for the preparation of full gold crowns and the lingual portion of a metal-ceramic crown. A chamfer margin should be smooth and distinct and allow for 0.5mm thickness of the material. This conserves tooth structure but still creates space for adequate bulk of the material.
Class I and Class II RPDs always have an axis of rotation. Class III RPDs never have an axis of rotation. Class IV RPDs seldom have an axis of rotation---some people consider that Class IV RPDs have an axis of rotation if all the incisors and both canines are missing, creating an anterior extension area.
Knife edge or feather end finishing line It is the most conservative type of finishing line since the least amount of tooth structure is removed, but the margin is weak since this margin design does not provide enough bulk or thickness for the material.
Finish Line: It is the peripheral extension of tooth preparation or It is the terminal portion of a prepared tooth. Definition by Schwartz: Refers to the border of preparation where the prepared tooth structure meets the unprepared surface of the tooth.
Pier abutment is an intermediate abutment for a fixed dental prosthesis. Moreover, an intermediate abutment is a natural tooth located between terminal abutments that serve to support a fixed/removable prosthesis. Pier abutment poses a challenge to prosthodontist.
It is a well-defined finishing line somewhat like knife edge finishing line except that the cut is made deeper. It forms a 130-160 cavo-surface line angle. A roundend tapered fissure bur is used to obtain this preparation margin.
Non-rigid connector placed on the distal aspect of pier seems to reduce potentially excess stress concentration on the pier abutment.
A chamfer finishing line should be prescribed whenever possible for any all-ceramic crown preparation since it demonstrates the best marginal fit as well as produces the most conservative tooth preparation.
