Behind him is Lennie Small, a huge man with large eyes and sloping shoulders, walking at a gait that makes him resemble a huge bear.
Rabbits represent Lennie's dreams and the impossibility of their fulfillment. Rabbits are a simple summation of everything Lennie hopes for, revealing his very simple thinking. Even when George first tells the story of the dream farm, it's at Lennie's prompting to tell him about the rabbits.
Steinbeck compares Lennie to a bear, a potentially very dangerous animal. Lennie drags his feet the way a bear drags his paws . The only way he can cope is to be a like a tame dog, tethered always to his master George and never let out of his master's sight.
Personification. Giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). General Example: The wind danced into the room. Of Mice and Men Example: “The shade climbed up the hills toward the top” (2).
Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does "a bad thing," George will not let him tend the rabbits.
Lennie is described as being George's 'opposite' – 'a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws'.
The rabbit symbolizes fertility, luck, and creativity. Rabbits also symbolize compassion and intuition. The rabbit is a popular symbol in many cultures around the world. Often associated with springtime and new beginnings, these happy critters are a reminder that life is full of possibility.
'His fist lost in Lennie's paw' – animal imagery – this surprises the men because they didn't knew how strong Lennie actually was. 'Lennie covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror' – more animal imagery – relates back to the beginning when he asks George if he should go live in a cave.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE #3 George warns Lennie that Curley's wife is a “rat- trap if I ever seen one.” The comparison is between Curly's wife and a rat-trap Page 12 FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE #4 “Slim moved with majesty… He was a jerk- line skinner, the prince of the ranch.”
Lennie, the follower, is compared to an animal, a bear – a massive and sometimes violent creature. His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool; drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse.
